A Love Story / Une histoire d'amour

A long long time ago, when I was studying in college, I had the opportunity of a summer job in Ottawa, working for the Department of Justice, right off Parliament Hill.  Something happened in my first weeks there:  I fell in love with Ottawa.  And although we had to part after my second summer there (I was done with college and had found a real job in Quebec), my love never died.  I have returned for visits a few times over the years, but it had been six years since I had last been there, so when Patrick suggested we spend a day there during our short vacation in Outaouais, I was thrilled.

Ottawa is first and foremost an administrative city, but I never felt there the austerity that often comes with it. Everywhere you look is a beautiful view.

Just for good measure, I feel like I have to show you what Patrick and I elected the worst eye sore of Ottawa, which happens to be the US Embassy building (nothing personal here, its just architectural!)  This ugly construction is really out of place between the splendid Notre-Dame Cathedral and the luxurious Fairmont Château Laurier.

Fortunately, just a few steps from there, you can look the other way and find yourself in front of the best view over Gatineau:  the Canadian Museum of Civilization, and Alexandra Bridge.

Ottawa is also full of beautiful parks and gardens, but I chose to show you these two well hidden and a bit quirky ones:  the first one is a japanese zen garden on a roof terrace of the Canadian Museum of Civilization, so it is technically not in Ottawa, but in Gatineau; the second one is the green house of the Bank of Canada, on Sparks Street.  The picture was taken from the outside, which is why it looks so blurry, but that is what is so intriguing about this garden.  When you walk on Sparks Street and see all this greenery through the glass, with the life of the street reflected in it, you can't help but stop and try to see more of it.

This concludes my visit in Ottawa, hoping to be able to go there again in the following years...

Lazy Days / Jours paisibles

I am on vacation this week, and we are having the most perfect weather ever.  I have been taking it pretty cool, spending some rare time in the hammock, leafing through magazines and enjoying simple pleasures in my backyard.

The Blue Jays come every day to bathe in the sun.  I am amazed how a simple bird bath filled with fresh water can attract so many birds.  The blue ones are the most common, but finches, sparrows, chickadees and robins also take turns.

My friend Gazou is now a fixture in my backyard, a summer day without him is a sad day.  Even when he spends the whole afternoon sleeping in the shade under the honeysuckle tree.

Nothing looks more like summer than black-eyed susans, except maybe sunflowers, but I skipped a year and do not have them in the garden this summer, just so I can appreciate them even more next year.

I found this strange wild flower in the untamed end of my yard, and even after looking through my plant guide, I cannot tell what they are called.  Their leaves look somehow like those of dandelions, and they have a big head of delicate lavender flowers.  Some specimens are as tall as three feet and kind of scary.  If by any chance you know what they are, please let me know!

My sweet peas are now in bloom, and although the flowers are very pretty, I was sorry to find out that they do not smell anything.  After reading a bit about sweet peas, I realized that the perennial varieties are not fragrant, only the annual ones are.  I will still keep this plant because it is so good looking and a great climber, but I will probably add some annual sweet peas to my garden next year, so I can finally enjoy their fragrance.

This may look like the back of a dinosaur, but it is only a leaf from a new-to-me plant called pumpkin-on-a-stick.  The thorns are impressive, but so far the plant is not.  It is very slow to develop and I have some doubts about the possibility of actually seeing "pumpkins" grow on it before the end of summer.  Only time will tell.

This, finally, is another wildflower found in my yard.  I don't know if I have new ones every year or if I simply had never noticed them before, but I had to look this one up to find out that it is called Hop Clover.

And on this, I will go back to my hammock.  I had some sewing projects for this week of vacation, but the gorgeous weather has kept me outside, far from my studio.  My garden, however, has been kept in great shape.

A (very) Mini-break / Une toute petite escapade

We are in a situation this summer where my boyfriend just started a new job, so he does not have any vacation.  I, on the other hand, can have four weeks off in summer for the first time in my eleven years of service with my employer.  I am happy to spend quiet time at home, in the comfort of our backyard, but at some point I need to get out of town for a change of scenery.

That’s why we decided, last Saturday, to get in the car and head east to Charlevoix.  This is, by far, my favorite region in the province, and we usually go there for a short visit every year.  Nature is generous in Charlevoix, with the St.Lawrence on one side, with its numerous bays and “anses”, and the rolling hills on the other side.  It is also a great destination for whoever enjoys art, particularly painting, as many artists have taken Charlevoix as their home and inspiration.

I had been dreaming of a stroll on the beach, sand between my toes and the sound of waves in my ears.  We headed first to St-Irénée, where the beach is right on the road side and no one can possibly go by and not stop.  We had a picnic on the beach, and then walked for a while as the tide was coming in.

There is actually a "horse rental" right on the beach

We then got back in the car and took a small road that led us to Cap-aux-Oies.  There, hidden in a small bay at the end of the road, behind the railway, is a much less popular beach.  We stopped for five minutes, but found ourselves trapped by the beauty of the scenery and stayed there well over an hour.  We risked ourselves walking in the cold water of the St.Lawrence, and watched a group of Common Eiders, a few female adults taking care of a bunch of juveniles.

We found this big seaweed-covered rock on the beach and it reminded us of a balding head of wet hair.

Last stop on our itinerary before returning to Québec, a lazy stroll on the main street of Baie-Saint-Paul, where small shops and art galleries abound, all lodged in colorful old buildings.  My recommendations:  Saveurs et Fraîcheurs for ice cream and this little sweets shop (sorry I can't remember the name) for old time candies.

So many to choose from!
Difficile de faire un choix!

We were back home by the end of the day, but this little expedition, although very short, has brought a new feel to my vacation.

I've been on vacation since last week and I am having a glorious time just enjoying summer's simple pleasures.
The weather is fabulous and I've been spending most of my time outside.

I've had the chance of picking some wild strawberries in my backyard.  They were so yummy!

We went downtown to the port and watched sails and boats on the St.Lawrence River.

I have had enough free time to notice small critters that I normally often ignore or don't have time to stop and watch.

I have even been working on some sewing, but since it is way too hot to sit outside with my huge quilt, I have decided to work on a smaller and lighter project, made with hexies in animal and polka dot prints.  I plan on joining them to make either a mug rug or a pot holder.

I always keep my camera close to capture a few birds.  It is a good time to see the youngs out the nests, but still being fed by their parents.  My birdfeeders are very busy these days with flocks of baby chickadees and a few young woodpeckers as well.

There is also some gardening going on, and visiting with friends and family, but really most of the time, I can be found just lazing around in the backyard, noticing how much the patio needs to be freshened up, and telling myself that tomorrow is the day I will do it...

London Paris New York Baie-Saint-Paul

The title is from a t-shirt I found in a gift shop in Baie-Saint-Paul yesterday, on our day out of town. My boyfriend and I are still laughing at it today because it is so funny to think Baie-Saint-Paul could measure up to these enormous cities, with its 7000 of population.

However, Baie-Saint-Paul sure has its own charms, and I'd choose it over bigger cities anytime. Besides, it should be known all over the world, after all this is where Cirque du Soleil was born back in the 1980s.

Anyway, we went there yesterday for a change of scenery, only one hour and a half from Quebec-city, and for a breath of fresh air. As its name indicates, Baie-Saint-Paul is a small town built in a little bay in the St.Lawrence River. It is also one of the craftiest and most artistic towns I know in the Province. The number of art galleries and craft shops is impressive. This is the perfect rendez-vous for landscapes painters, and you may understand why from the few pictures below that I took during the day.

Above is a large view on the bay, with the small beach, the quay and Rivière du Gouffre.
Below is a closer look at the town and its rural setting.

Only a few minutes east of Baie-Saint-Paul we took the ferry to cross over to Isle-aux-Coudres, a small island in the St.Lawrence that makes about 30 km in circumference. We rented a "Junior", one of those funny two-place bicycles and slowly pedaled our way along the south shore road, enjoying the beautiful "seashore" landscape and the characteristic smell. We could almost believe we were by the sea, although this is just the St.Lawrence River and we can see the other shore in the distance. The tide was at its lowest when we were there, which is why you can barely see the water on the pictures, but the feeling was there all the same.

I took great interest in the wild flowers growing on the shore, like thousands of common rose bushes with their sweet smell (above) and other colorful flowers (below).

Look how patient Patrick and Crusty were while I hopped down the bicycle and on again to take one picture here and another one just a hundred yards away! I loved how some people used heavy boat cables to fence their properties,

or an old bicycle frame as a decorative accent in their garden.

I fell in love with the little stone house below and its neatly arranged flowers. It is a very small house and it made me think of a doll-house. Besides, I have a thing for stone walls. My parents have the most amazing one (of which I should definitely take a few pictures next time I go there).

After our tour on Isle-aux-Coudres, we made it back to Baie-Saint-Paul and went down to the beach. It really is just a long and narrow patch of sand on one side of the bay, but it always feels good to walk barefoot in the sand, even though the water was so far off with the tide being so low.

We had originally planned to stay there for a couple of days, but with rain in the forecast, we headed back home on the same day. Now trying to find another spot not too far from town where we could be heading in the following days, before Patrick's vacation is over.

See you soon,
Sylvie
