Wool Owls and a tutorial / Hiboux d'automne et un tutoriel

Finally, I am back in my studio, and to start the new sewing season, I worked on a very easy project perfect for fall.  I don't know why it is, but owls are a symbol of fall to me, and paired with cozy wool plaids, it looked like a match made in heaven.

Enfin, je suis de retour dans mon atelier, et pour commencer ma nouvelle saison de couture, j'ai travaillé sur un petit projet facile parfait pour l'automne.  Je ne sais pourquoi, mais dans ma tête, les hiboux représentent l'automne, d'autant plus s'ils sont jumelés à des beaux tissus de laine à carreaux. 

The project I made is nothing new, but I thought a little tutorial might still be useful to some of you.  If you do make an owl - or a whole lot of them - I would be very happy if you would send me a link to your creation in the comments.

Le projet que j'ai réalisé n'est rien de nouveau, mais j'ai pensé qu'un petit tutoriel pourrait quand même être utile à certaines d'entre vous.  Et si vous vous lancez dans la confection d'un hibou - ou de toute une collection d'oiseaux - je serais très heureuse que vous ajoutiez un lien vers vos créations dans les commentaires.

Material (for one owl measuring about 3" X3")

- A scrap piece of wool (felted or not) at least 7" X 6".  Other materials like velvet or denim would be great as well.
- A scrap of coordinating cotton about 3" X 3"
- The templates included at the end of this post and a small piece of cardboard.
- Two buttons about 5/8" in diameter for the eyes
- Coordinating embroidery thread
- And the usual: scissors, needle, pins, thread, sewing machine, iron (a mini iron if you have one).

Matériel (pour un hibou d'environ 8 cm X 8 cm)

- Un morceau de laine (feutrée ou non) d'au moins 18 cm X 16 cm.  D'autres matières comme le velours ou le denim pourraient aussi très bien faire.
- Un morceau de coton coordonné d'environ 8 cm X 8 cm
- Le patron inclus à la fin de cet article et un bout de carton
- Deux boutons d'environ 1.5 cm de diamètre pour les yeux
- Du fil à broder agencé aux couleurs de la laine
- Et l'habituel: ciseaux, aiguille, épingles, fil à coudre, machine à coudre, fer à repasser (un mini fer si vous en avez un).

Step 1
Print the template on a letter size (8 1/2" X 11") paper sheet.  The measurement I noted inside the egg-shaped piece are only there so you can check that your printed template is the same size as mine.
Cut out both pieces.
The biggest piece will be the body of your owl.
The smaller piece will be the belly, and it will be easier to use if you trace it on cardboard because paper is not sturdy enough to work well.

Étape 1
Imprimer le patron sur une feuille de papier de format lettre.  Les mesures que j'ai notées à l'intérieur de la pièce qui ressemble à un oeuf sont seulement à titre indicatif, pour que vous puissiez vérifier que votre patron est de la même grandeur que celui que j'ai utilisé.
Découper les deux morceaux.
Le plus grand morceau, en forme d'oeuf, formera le corps du hibou.
Le plus petit morcerau servira de plastron, et il sera plus facile à utiliser si on le retrace sur un morceau de carton, parce que le papier n'est pas suffisamment rigide.

Step 2
Pin the body template to your wool scrap and cut around it.  No need to add seam allowances, they are already included in the template.

Étape 2
Épingler le patron du corps sur le morceau de laine et découper tout autour.  Nul besoin d'ajouter les valeurs de couture, elles sont incluses dans le patron.

Step 3
Repeat step 2 to have two identical pieces.

Étape 3
Répéter l'étape 2 pour obtenir deux morceaux identiques.

Step 4
Match both pieces wrong side out and pin in place.

Étape 4
Aligner les deux morceaux l'un sur l'autre, endroit contre endroit, et épingler en place.

Step 5
Sew all around your two pieces.  No need to leave an opening, we will use an easier - and lazier - technique.

Étape 5
Coudre tout autour des deux morceaux.  Pas besoin de laisser une ouverture, nous utiliserons plutôt une technique plus simple et plus rapide.

Step 6
Separate the two layers between your fingers by pinching one of them, and with the point of your scissors, make a vertical cut no longer than 1 1/2" long.

Étape 6
Séparer les deux épaisseurs entre les doigts en pinçant l'une d'elles, et avec la pointe des ciseaux, pratiquer une entaille verticale qui ne dépasse pas 4 cm de long.

Step 7
Through this opening, turn your owl inside out.  The side that has the opening will be the front of your owl.

Étape 7
Par cette ouverture, retourner le hibou pour que l'endroit soit à l'extérieur.  Le côté de l'entaille sera le devant du hibou.

Step 8
Now move on to the cardboard template.  Place it on the wrong side of your scrap of cotton in a way that you have about 3/8" extra fabric on each side.  Roughly draw a line around the template as I did in the picture below, and then cut on this line.

Utiliser maintenant le patron qui a été reporté sur du carton et le placer sur l'envers du morceau de coton, de façon à ce qu'il y ait un extra d'environ 1 cm tout autour.  Tracer une ligne à main levée autour du patron, comme je l'ai fait dans la photo qui suit, et découper sur cette ligne.

Step 9
With your iron, or mini iron if you have one, fold the extra fabric over the cardboard template and press in place, then take the cardboard out.

Avec votre fer à repasser, ou mini fer si vous en avez un, replier le tissu sur le patron en carton et pressez en place.  Retirer ensuite le morceau de carton.

Step 10
Place your piece of cotton, with the fold hidden inside, on the body piece, making sure to cover the cut from which you turned it inside out, and pin in place.

Étape 10
Placer le morceau de coton, avec le repli caché en dessous, sur le morceau du corps du hibou, en s'assurant de bien recouvrir l'entaille par laquelle le hibou avait été retourné.  Épingler en place.

Step 11
With a needle and thread, blind-stitch the cotton piece in place.

Étape 11
Avec une aiguille et du fil, fixer au point invisible.

Step 12
Fold the upper point of the wool piece over the belly part, to form the head of the owl.  Press in place with your iron.

Étape 12
Replier la partie supérieure en pointe par-dessus le plastron en coton, de manière à former la tête du hibou.  Presser en place avec le fer à repasser.

Step 13
With embroidery thread, join the point to the belly.  This will be the bill of the owl.  Then, sew buttons in place for the eyes, and meet your new friend.

Étape 13
Au moyen de fil à broder, fixer la pointe au plastron, de manière à former un bec.  Coudre ensuite les boutons en guise d'yeux, et il ne vous reste plus qu'à faire connaissance avec votre nouvel ami.

You can make as many owls as you want and have a whole family of them.  To make a garland like I did in my top picture, simply thread a twine in the top fold of each owl and attach it to your wall.

Vous pouvez fabriquer autant de petits hiboux qu'il vous plaira et en avoir une famille complète!  Pour en faire une guirlande comme j'ai fait dans ma photo du début, il vous suffira d'insérer une ficelle sous le pli au sommet de la tête de chaque hibou, et d'en attacher les extrémités à un mur.

Below is the template that I used to make my owls.  I can't explain why it appears grey when  my paper sheet was white, but it seems like this is the best I can do for now...  You may want to save the image to your computer and then print it on letter-size paper.  The dimensions are there so you can check that your printed template is the same size as mine.  Of course, you can enlarge it if you want, but then the quantity of fabric needed will be greater than what I gave in the material list.

Voici  le patron que j'ai utilisé pour fabriquer mes hiboux.  Je ne m'explique pas comment l'image peut apparaître grise alors que ma feuille de papier était blanche, mais il semble que ce soit le mieux que je puisse faire pour le moment...  Il serait sans doute préférable de sauvegarder l'image sur votre ordinateur avant de l'imprimer sur du papier de format lettre.  Les mesures sont indiquées pour que vous puissiez vérifier que votre patron une fois imprimé a les mêmes dimensions que le mien.  Bien sûr, rien ne vous empêche de l'agrandir si vous le voulez, mais dans ce cas rappelez-vous que vous aurez besoin de plus de tissu que ce que j'ai noté dans la liste de matériel.

A bottle and some twine / Une bouteille et de la ficelle

 

Good morning all!  Here is the little project that I worked on yesterday when the wind prevented me from playing with spray paint.  I had been wanting to cover a bottle with twine for a long time, I had a few images and tutorials pinned on Pinterest.  Yesterday was the perfect time to try it, and I just love the result.

Bon matin à toutes!  Voici le petit projet sur lequel j'ai travaillé hier, alors que les forts vents m'ont découragée de jouer avec de la peinture en aérosol.  Depuis longtemps je voulais recouvrir une bouteille de ficelle, j'en avais plusieurs images et tutoriels en tableaux sur Pinterest.  Hier était la journée parfaite pour m'y mettre, et j'adore le résultat.

I used some Sisal tying twine that I found in the gardening department of our local hardware store.  It is very rough and the thickness varies a lot, and I think that it is even better because it adds more texture to the finished project.  My bottle is just a small wine bottle that I saved from the recycling bin.  I washed it well and removed all the stickers from it before starting, because you can still see some of the glass peeking through the twine.

J'ai utilisé une simple ficelle de sisal que j'ai trouvée dans le département de jardinage de ma quincaillerie.  C'est un matériel plutôt brut, et son épaisseur varie beaucoup, mais je pense que c'est encore mieux parce que ça ajoute de la texture au produit fini.  Ma bouteille est une petite bouteille de vin que j'ai cueillie dans le bac de recyclage.  Je l'ai bien nettoyée et j'ai pris soins d'enlever toutes les étiquettes avant de commencer à enrouler la ficelle, parce qu'on voit le verre par endroit, entre les brins de ficelle.

The flowers are sweet peas from my garden, and they are pretty much the only thing worth seeing there these days.  Unfortunately, they do not have any fragrance, as they are the perennial kind, and I learned after they bloomed for the first time that only the annual sweet peas have fragrance...

Les fleurs sont des pois de senteur de mon jardin, et elles sont à peu près les seules fleurs qui valent la peine d'être vues dans mon jardin ces jours-ci.  Malheureusement, elles ne dégagent aucune fragrance, parce que ce sont des vivaces, et j'ai appris seulement au moment de leur première floraison que seuls les pois de senteur annuels dégagent une odeur...

It is a glorious day outside, so I guess I will get my spray paint out and try what I had planned for yesterday.  I have very rarely worked with spray paint and I am a little bit intimidated, so wish me luck.

Il fait un temps superbe aujourd'hui, alors je pense bien que je vais sortir ma peinture en aérosol et tenter ce que j'avais planifié pour hier.  J'ai très rarement travaillé avec la peinture en aérosol, et je suis un peu intimidée par elle, alors souhaitez-moi bonne chance.

My first Quilt / Mon premier quilt

I can't believe that I have - finally - finished my first quilt.  I started it three years ago, and it remained unfinished for a very long time, but last week I got tired of seeing it sitting there waiting, so I decided it was time to put an end to it.  All that remained was to sew the binding on, so it wasn't long to do, and now I am very happy with the final result.

Je n'arrive pas à croire que j'ai terminé mon premier quilt - enfin!  Je l'avais commencé il y a trois ans, et je l'avais laissé en plan pendant de longs mois, mais la semaine dernière je n'en pouvais plus de le voir là, plié sur une chaise en attente d'être terminé, alors je m'y suis remise.  Il ne restait en fait qu'à ajouter la bordure finale, alors ça n'a pas été très long, et je suis très contente du résultat final.

One of the steps that took me a very long time was choosing the backing fabric, which is Valori Wells Del Hi Pom Pom.  The other step that took me forever was the quilting.  I had no idea how to do it, so I finally opted for knotting it on the back.

L'une des étapes qui m'a pris beaucoup de temps, c'était de choisir le tissu pour l'endos, qui s'appelle Del Hi Pom Pom, par Valori Wells.  L'autre étape qui a retarté la complétion est le piquage.  Je n'avais aucune idée comment m'y prendre, et j'ai finalement décidé de faire des centaines de noeuds sur l'envers.

The funny thing is that I don't really need this quilt, and I don't know where I will use it in the house, so for the moment it is back sitting pretty on a chair.

Le plus drôle, c'est que je n'ai pas vraiment besoin de ce quilt, et je ne sais pas quel sera son usage dans la maison, alors pour le moment il attend patiemment sur une chaise.

Spring Top / Blouse printannière

I have been sewing for a few years now, but for some reason I was afraid to make clothes.  I was sure it would never fit me well and that I would end up not wearing what I'd made.  This little top, from the pattern by MadebyRae, had been on my project list for a couple of years, and I also had the fabric waiting in my stash all that time, but I kept putting it off.

Je m'adonne à la couture depuis quelques années déjà, mais j'ai toujours eu peur de me lancer dans la confection de vêtements.  Je craignais de ne pas arriver à bien les ajuster et d'en être déçue au point de ne pas porter mes confections.  Ce petit haut, d'après un patron de MadebyRae, était sur ma liste de projets à faire depuis environ deux ans, et j'avais même le tissu que je gardais en réserve depuis tout ce temps.  Et malgré tout, je remettais sans cesse le projet à plus tard.

 I finally took the plunge a couple of weeks ago and I am very pleased with how it turned out.  And I will definitely wear it when the temperatures get warmer.  I am also thinking about going for a skirt or a dress next.

Je me suis enfin lancée il y a quelques semaines, et je suis tout compte fait très satisfaite du résultat.  Et je vais sans contredit le porter dès que les températures le permettront.

There was a lot of fussing when it was time to adjust the straps, so if I were to do it again, I would invite a friend over or at least wait for a day when Patrick is around.  Pinning stuff in your own back is not an easy task!

J'ai eu un peu de mal au moment d'ajuster les bretelles, donc si c'était à refaire, j'inviterais une amie pour m'aider, ou du moins j'attendrais un jour ou Patrick est à la maison pour me donner un coup de main.  Épingler un vêtement dans son propre dos n'est pas chose facile!

One More Bag / Un nouveau sac

I'd had this bag on my project list for a long time, and I finally came around to making it last week.  The pattern is "I'll have one of everything bag", by Anna Maria Horner.  It was easier to make than I had expected, and I really like the braided handles.  If you would like to make yourself one too, check out this book.

J'avais depuis longtemps ce projet sur ma liste, et j'ai enfin pris le temps de le coudre la semaine dernière.  Le patron est "I'll have one of everything bag", par Anna Maria Horner.  Je l'ai trouvé plus simple à réaliser que j'avais imaginé, et j'aime beaucoup les poignées tressées.  Si vous avez envie d'en coudre un aussi, le patron est disponible dans ce livre.

Turtles Makeover / Nouveau look pour les tortues

I realise that I have been absent for almost a month, again.  I did not mean to stay away for so long, and the project that I am showing today has been complete for a couple of weeks already.  But you know how it is, life sometimes get in the way and the blog has to wait.

I had told you that I was working on something for my turtles, and you can see a glimpse of it in the picture above, proudly presented by one of my little friends, Tofu (and yes, I know it is an awkward name for an animal, but that is just the way I am, and for my defense, I was quite young when I named her because she is now over 20 years old, like her two other companions).

Je réalise que j'ai encore été absente pendant près d'un mois, et je m'en excuse.  Je n'avais pas l'intention de rester silencieuse aussi longtemps, et d'ailleurs le projet que je vous présente aujourd'hui est complété depuis au moins deux semaines.  Mais vous savez comment c'est, parfois la vie va trop vite et le blog doit attendre.

J'avais mentionné dans mon article précédent que je préparais un petit quelque chose pour mes tortues, et vous pouvez en voir un aperçu dans la photo ci-dessus, fièrement présenté par l'une de mes petites compagnes, Tofu (je sais, c'est un nom assez singulier pour un animal, mais je suis comme çà, et pour ma défense, j'étais encore très jeune quand j'ai choisi son nom, parce qu'elle est maintenant âgée de plus de 20 ans, comme ses deux semblables).

My turtles are quite large, each measuring close to 10 inches long, and they live in two big tanks sitting on the floor in my living room.  They even get the best spot in front of the window so they can have full light and lots of sunshine, in which they thrive.  I need to have mats under the tanks so that the weight doesn't damage the floor, and also to help me move the tanks around the place when I need to.  Years and years ago, my mom had crocheted a green mat for one of the tanks, and the beige plushy fabric that became the other tank's mat came from God knows where.

Mes tortues sont plutôt grosses, chacune mesurant près de 25 cm de long, et elles vivent dans deux gros aquariums déposés à même le sol dans notre salon.  Elles occupent d'ailleurs l'endroit le plus convoité, directement devant la fenêtre pour qu'elles puissent profiter de toute la lumière et de beaucoup de soleil, dont elles ont besoin pour rester en santé.  Je dois installer des petits tapis sous les aquariums pour éviter que leur poids abime le plancher, et aussi pour m'aider à les déplacer quand j'en ai besoin.  Il y a de nombreuses années, ma mère avait crocheté un tapis vert pour l'un des aquariums, et le tissus pelucheux de couleur beige est sorti d'on ne sait trop quel endroit.

In all those years, I did not really pay much attention to those makeshift mats, until I noticed that they had become shapeless and were not looking good at all.  That's when I decided to make my own coordinating mats, a very simple pattern using colorful fabrics, one of which has turtles on it.

Pendant toutes ces années, je n'ai pas trop porté attention à ces tapis de fortune, jusqu'à ce que je remarque qu'ils étaient déformés et que je réalise enfin qu'ils n'avaient rien de joli.  Je me suis donc mise à la tâche et j'ai cousu vite fait des nouveaux tapis coordonnés, dans des tissus colorés, dont un à motifs de tortues.

They look much brighter now, but I have to admit that my little friends were pretty confused at first by all those patterns underneath them.  They got used to it after a couple of days, and I guess we are now good for another 20 years!

Ils sont maintenant bien plus clairs et amusants, mais je dois avouer que mes tortues étaient plutôt déboussolées au début, avec tous ses motifs et couleurs en dessous d'elles.  Elles s'y sont habituées après quelques jours, et j'espère qu'elles en seront heureuses pour les vingt prochaines années.

While I was gone - Part 2 / Pendant mon absence - 2e partie

I have been working on a few other projects during the fall.  One of them is this small patchworked basket, which I made using my favorite pattern from Pink Penguin.  This is the fifth basket I make from this pattern.  The fabrics I used for this one are Liberty of London.  I love the prints from Liberty, but I found it a bit difficult to work with such delicate fabrics.

J'ai travaillé sur quelques autres projets pendant l'automne.  L'un d'entre eux est ce petit panier en patchwork, que j'ai réalisé en utilisant mon patron préféré de Pink Penguin.  C'est le cinquième panier que je couds à partir de ce patron.  Les tissus que j'ai utilisés pour celui-ci sont de la maison Liberty of London.  J'adore les imprimés de Liberty, mais j'ai trouvé un peu difficile de travailler avec des tissus aussi délicats.

I finally completed this chair pad that was lying unfinished in my studio for months.  All that needed to be done was the quilting with embroidery thread.  I sat for an evening in front of the TV and that was done.

J'ai aussi enfin complété ce petit coussin de chaise qui traînait dans mon studio depuis des mois.  Il ne me restait pourtant qu'à le piquer avec du fil à broder.  Une petite soirée devant la télé et le tour était joué.

Finally, this is not a sewing project, but it is one that kept me busy for a few days:  we started a little transformation in our laundry room.  This is one of the last two rooms that remained as they were when we bought the house over three years ago.  The color, a dark lime green, was ugly and there were holes in the wall, where a shelf used to be.  Since we needed to replace our old washer/dryer, it was the ideal moment to repair and paint the walls.

Finalement, le dernier n'est pas un projet de couture, mais c'en est un qui m'a tenue occupée pendant quelques jours:  nous avons commencé une petite transformation de notre buanderie.  C'est l'une des deux dernières pièces de la maison qui n'avaient pas changé depuis que nous avons acheté la maison il y a un peu plus de trois ans.  La couleur, un vert lime éclatant, était affreuse et il y avait encore des trous dans le mur là ou une tablette avait jadis été installée.  Comme nous devions remplacer nos vieux électros, le moment était idéal pour réparer et repeindre les murs.

We used the same color as the one in our family room, because we had a gallon left from it, and the color matched well with the flooring.  However, the new washer/dryer are lower than the old ones, and so we can see the big hole in the wall where the plumbing is.  I guess we could move the plumbing and replaster the wall, but I am trying to find an easier and more creative way to deal with this little problem.  I may have had an idea this morning, but I will show you when we are done in this room.  We still need to install cupboards on the wall for storage, and some decorations.

Nous avons utilisé la même couleur que celle de notre salle familiale, parce qu'il nous en restait un galon, et la couleur se mariait bien à celle du plancher.  Cependant, le modèle des nouveaux électros laisse voir le grand trou dans le mur ou se trouve la plomberie.  Je suppose que nous pourrions déplacer les tuyaux et refaire le mur, mais j'essaie de trouver une manière plus simple et plus créative de traiter ce petit problème.  Je pense avoir eu une bonne idée ce matin, mais je la dévoilerai quand nous aurons fini le travail dans cette pièce.  Il nous reste encore à installer des armoires pour ajouter du rangement, et quelques décorations colorées.

Craft Book Challenge... without the book

Well, there is a book, I just don't get along with it very well.  My two last projects, meant to be my CBC for February and March, were supposed to come from this book, but the patterns were all wrong for me and so I had to toss the book aside and improvise, which turned out to feel even better.  It made me realize that I can do stuff my own way and it can look as good as the ready-made patterns.  Huge boost for my self-esteem.

So, the book in question is Sew!, by Cath Kidston.  

It is a very good-looking book with great ideas, and I don't regret buying it.  In fact, I am trying a third project from this book, knowing that if I get lost again with the pattern, I can change a few things and work it out.  My first attempt was a needle book, shown here in the book:

I thought that using fabric covered cardboard was a bright idea, that is until I tried it and realized it did not really work out well.  My main problem was that my Heat'n'Bond stuff did not really stick to either the cardboard or the felt, so that the whole thing was coming apart.  It might be that I was using the wrong stuff, or that I did not know how to use it.  Anyway, I had to add a few stitches here and there to secure it a bit, but it ended up looking a little too cheap for my taste.  

You can see below what it looks like from the back, where I had to sew the strap.

I was not about to call it quit, though, so I made my own version, inspired by the pattern, but without the cardboard and the fabric adhesive.  Everything is sewn and nothing will come apart with this one.  It is not as sturdy as the one from the book, but I wasn't really into it to begin with, so I made mine a soft cover with a sheet of felt as batting.

I like this one much better and as you can see, I have already found some use for it.

My second attempt was a fabric-covered coat hanger.

I have to report that I did not go very far with this pattern.  I read the instructions twice and could not make any sense of them.  The measurements were all wrong for the hangers that I had, and the gathering technique did not seem to me like it would work.  I was still on my guard from my recent experience with the needle book, so I used the book as inspiration for the choice of fabrics and I just drew my own pattern to fit my hangers.

I am still surprised they came out so good, and I can see a few more of these hangers in a near future, because these were given to my mom for her birthday, but I want some for myself as well.

 So far, the CBC has been very revealing to me.  I have learned not to be afraid to try something new, and I have learned to trust my instinct and to improvise.  The three patterns that I had chosen lacked some instructions, and I have had to stop and think to find out how to get to the result in my own way.

My next project again comes from Sew!, and hopefully I can work around that one too.  I will show you soon what I am up to.
